Deactivate & Deleting Harmful Applications
Many of our social media platforms, browsing apps, email and map applications are being exploited, with our data being unethically harvested and sold to third parties. X (formerly known as Twitter) is actively censoring speech that challenges Trump, far-right ideologies, and his billionaire allies. Facebook has suspended its fact-checking program, allowing misinformation to spread unchecked and making it easier to manipulate public opinion. TikTok has started censoring anti-Trump content and news related to the current administration, and the situation is only worsening. It's concerning to think about how much worse it could get after the platform is forced to sell.
Every time you use these platforms, the more ads you see, the more money they make. By deactivating your accounts, you are costing them millions in ad revenue. While there are some "safe havens" like Substack and BlueSky, it’s unclear how long they will remain unaffected.
What you can do.
Listed below are several resources you can add to your smart phone to replace some of the harmful social media or browsing apps.
Blue Sky and Substack
These two are good options that are similar to Twitter without having your homepage drowned out by voices of the Alt-Right or being blasted by ADs.
Google Alternatives
There are several browser options that do not use google and they do not store your data to use ADs. Some of the more popular ones are listed below:
Amazon Alternatives
There are several different options when it comes to shopping that does not involve amazon. Some grocery stores have options for pick up or delivery. Shop used at local thrift stores or pawn shops. Alibaba, Etsy, TikTok shop are all various alternatives as well but cannot be spoken for their sustainability practices.
Instead of paying for a subscription to store your own data seek an alternative such as external hard drives or high capacity USB stick to download all of your files, photos, videos etc. There are a lot of options that are compatible with smartphones.
Navigation
No longer will Apple or Google maps have a dominance in the navigation world. Listed below are good alternatives that do not track and share your data.
